5 Resolutions That Nearly Everyone Fails

5 Resolutions That Nearly Everyone Fails

Let’s face it, how often do you actually stick to your New Year’s resolution? No one likes to actually spell it out (because it’s so depressing) but not many people actually stick to their resolutions.

By the time spring rolls around, we forget about learning a new language or going to the gym, right? Bursting with the joyous spirit of the new year, we sometimes get carried away with our resolutions.

No one has a superhuman amount or willpower (even though we might wish that was the case, so so badly!) While it’s great to shoot for the stars, let’s get realistic.

5. Save Money

Saving money is certainly a worthy goal. After-all, you have bills to pay, student loans, rent, etc. I’m sure you don’t need to be reminded! Not only that, but perhaps you want to save money on a future family or an international vacation.

Life is expensive, so you’re wanting to be more frugal. One reason that this resolution often fails is because you cannot plan for accidents or unexpected times when you need to dip into your savings account.

Also, we often spend money when we are happy. Brainstorm a few ways that you can celebrate with your friends and family that do not involve money, such as playing tennis or walking to the beach.

4. Lose Weight

So many of us want to lose weight, but we do not know how to go about it in a safe and healthy way. The problem here is that we start a diet for a few weeks and then we don’t see results quickly enough.

“I gave up dessert and nights out with my friends for two weekends and I only lost two pounds.” And then they throw in the towel.

It’s about consistency for weeks and even months. Not many of us have the patience or willpower for that.

3. Volunteer More

This is a great goal! You want to be part of something meaningful. Let’s make a concrete plan. The first step is finding out where to volunteer.

Take out a piece of paper and write down your interests and passions. Afterward, do some research. Once you’ve chosen the organization, then you need to look at your schedule.

Do you have time to volunteer each week? I’m not talking about just this week. Look ahead. Do you have a few free hours each day for a few months? Don’t commit to something if you’re going to flake after the third week. Or, if you can only volunteer for two weeks, be upfront about that.

2. Enjoy Life

Who doesn’t want to enjoy life more? Everybody would like to wake up and have a more positive outlook on their life, wouldn’t they?

Let’s get specific.

In what way do you want to enjoy your life more? If you’re looking to do some real work on changing your attitude, try gratitude journaling and therapy. If you’re looking for thrill and adrenaline rushes, you could try an extreme sport.

If you’re looking for healthy relationships, you could try dating again or seeking community. Ask yourself more follow-up questions. Otherwise, this resolution will get lost in the shuffle.

1. Quit Smoking

Just because it says January 1 on your calendar, doesn’t mean that this difficult resolution will magically become a cinch. You’ve got to dig deep and figure out a system that works for you. Everyone is different.

You’ve got to explore the emotions at play. Are you trying to escape something? Figure out what triggers your habit.

Don’t give up on your first try! It takes time to kick a habit.

----------

When you want to give up on yourself, think about why you’re doing this to begin with. You should be able to defend your goals in your own mind. Make sure that you’re really making these resolutions for yourself.

This isn’t about your mom, dad, husband, wife, grandma, friend, teacher, or classmates. It’s about YOU.

If you really want it, you’ve got to dig deep. If you believe you can beat the statistic, you can! Remember, be realistic!
